New Year's Celebration Gone Wrong? Leave It To The Professionals

While most fireworks are illegal in the State Of California due to the various serious injuries and millions of dollars lost in property damage, this doesn’t stop consumer fireworks. In fact, according to the National Fire Protection Association, firework injuries increased by 56% in the United States with roughly 15,600 people injured from firework-related disasters, reflecting the highest estimate seen in 15 years. The latest NFPA “Fireworks, Fires and Injuries'' report suggests in 2018 the US saw 19,500 fires caused by fireworks leading to $105 million in property damage. This year alone, Cal Fire reported California has seen nearly 2,569,000 acres burnt from wildfires. Whether you’re a concerned homeowner, property manager, or community member it’s important to know how to celebrate legally and safely.

  • In the State of California, it is illegal to sell, transport, or use fireworks that do not carry the “Safe and Sane” seal, as well as possess or use fireworks in a community where they are not permitted. Therefore, there is a chance that your property or home insurance policies will not cover fire damage if it was caused by illegal consumer fireworks.

Tips to help you and your property stay safe this New Year’s Eve:

  • Few Bay Area cities allow “Safe and Sane” fireworks, but if you’re in one that does, make sure to purchase your fireworks legally. If they’re not legal, do not use them.

  • If using legal fireworks at home, keep a bucket of water or a handy hose nearby in case of a fire. Never use fireworks near grass or flammable materials.

  • Always use fireworks outdoors.

  • Never put any part of your body over a firework when lighting a fuse or point it at another person. Do not try to re-light or “fix” fireworks. Read directions carefully.

  • Keep an eye on any children. According to the NFPA, roughly one third of injuries caused by fireworks are children.

  • Watch out for neighboring fires and prepare your property to prevent disaster by clearing your gutters, trimming your trees, running the sprinklers, removing any dry brush, and wetting the surrounding perimeter.
